I have struggled to get back into writing. Can I rip the bandage off and just go again…?

I thought I was going to be back in April. That was almost five months ago. Before that, I thought I was going to be back in August 2021 with my 10-year anniversary of writing. That did not work out either. My 11th anniversary came and went in a pandemic-era blur.

Multiple people have asked me in the last few months (all of them family interestingly…not sure what that says about my audience…) why I have not posted anything in a year. It turns out, that this is a question I had no answer for. I have been contemplating my struggle to answer it.

Why have I struggled to continue something that I have loved doing for a decade? What changed? Why not pick it back up? Why is this an unexpected struggle now?

The easy answer, of course, is the pandemic. The other easy answer is that the company I work for was undergoing a massive M&A event that ended up falling through at the same time. Together, it created uncertainty that led me to be overly conservative about what I put out into the world. But that all largely disappeared as an excuse over a year ago.

The next answer is that the world of corporate/commercial real estate has fundamentally changed. Some would say this makes it easier to write about. Unfortunately for me, I ended up with big ideas that ended up sounding rambly and meandering with no conclusion. It was a situation that was not inspiring for hitting the post button.

Together, it led to a dry spell of writing which led to doubt which led to procrastination which led to even less posting.

In all truth, I have never been more excited about the direction of corporate real estate than right here at this moment. Most of the industry still seems to be reacting in the wrong directions leading to all kinds of interesting opportunities. Change and denial are abundant. If you want to see a group of people unable to read the winds of change, just check out most of #CRE on Twitter. The “everyone will be forced back to the office” takes are still continuing at this moment regardless of fundamental truths that should now be self-evident to even the most ardent skeptic.

What does this mean for me here? Hopefully, I am back and will write. There are several posts written and ready, I just need to get my groove back.

Here’s hoping. I like it here.
