Many organizations know what they should be doing and do everything in their power to do it. This means that there are oceans of spreadsheets and manual processes used to keep up with what needs to be done. The ideas are the right ones but the processes don’t exist to be efficient.
As Process Editor-in-Chief I would view my role as saying “Good idea, not implementable – don’t do it until we can do it efficiently.” As they say, the path to Hell is paved with good intentions. Doing work for the right reason is not enough, the work itself must be done well. Sometimes you simply need someone to come in and say enough is enough. Being right isn’t enough.
500 Excel spreadsheets are not a database – especially when they are a sample of only 5% of the total portfolio. That’s a lot of work to get not much result – especially when the data itself is not analyzable.
Don’t create processes that you can’t actually do yet. Be honest about your capabilities. Tracking 5 KPIs accurately is often better than tracking 25 KPIs inaccurately. Sure, 25 accurate KPIs would be phenomenal but accuracy is the key.
