Why Challenge Current Thinking?

Some people like to go with the herd.  What everyone else does is fine with them.  It’s part of what is driving the Cult of Apple (although it helps that they also make great products).  It’s what prevents innovation.

When people fall in line with current thinking on the “correct” way of doing things and enough time passes, “correct” can quickly become “only”.  It’s when a culture says to challengers “you are wrong, we don’t care that you have something new” simply because it’s an easy and justifiable excuse.  If Steve Jobs had behaved this way then RIM and Nokia would still be the dominant phone manufacturers.  Instead they are both on life support.

The same is true in search engines.  If Google was really a search provider they wouldn’t provide all kinds of free and useful online tools.  But they challenged the thinking and turned themselves into an advertising firm.  The same is probably true in your organization.

Those that say “we can do better” should be celebrated.  Those that volunteer new business models should be given the ability to test their thoughts.  Sometimes “because it’s how we’ve always done it” is the best reason to change.
