I’d like to throw out a new concept for phenomena that happen in shared settings. Things like leadership and culture are closer to emotions than to definable traits. You know a leader when you encounter one. Just as you can experience culture without knowing any specific characteristic of that culture.
Some people passionately advocate for certain definitions or try to get Leadership introduced as part of college or MBA curriculum. But from all the articles I’m finding that is far easier to explain leadership by defining what it isn’t. That’s the same way that we have to define our emotions.
Leadership is not being the boss.
Leadership is not being right all the time.
Leadership is not imposing your will on all situations.
Leadership is not definable as a generic concept.
