I love reading articles that start with “The Truth about….” whether they address working from home, having kids, relocating for a new job, dealing with stress, starting new habits or anything else. They are always unintentionally funny because they reveal more about the author than they do the subject matter.
I’ve worked from home for about 5 years now and know quite a few home workers as well. One thing I’ve found to be true is that no two people work from home the same way or for the same reasons. I know some that have set up offices outside their home in a garage or separate building so that they have complete separation. I know others that don’t even have a desk and do everything from the couch/bed/kitchen table and have for years. Some struggle with working from home after years and others took to it like fish to water.
For me, every week is different. Some weeks I treat it as if I am going into an office so do the whole dress up (meaning jeans) thing. Most weeks it’s closer to comfort-wear. However, I always do the work itself from a dedicated office that has no TV in order to force myself to focus. This also helps in separating work from home environments because outside of the office is not associated with work.
Finding truths from others is always an interesting task. Many ancient Greek philosophers spent large amounts of time trying to discover ways of relaying truth to others. At the end of the day, truth always changes for every individual. There is nothing more full of hubris than trying to pass your truth on as the truth for a large group.
