The single biggest advantage of working in an organization is the free education that you can give yourself.
Every organization whether 5 people or 50,000 is filled with experts of some sort. When working at an organization, you are in the ideal position to learn from these experts. Many of these people have more practical knowledge and capability than you could ever hope to get in a classroom setting.
Teachers at universities are a self-selected group. They are people that have chosen to take themselves out of the corporate/consulting workforce to educate the next generation. Some make that decision because a school gives them the opportunity for research but they are still a self-selected group. You will always find a greater range of experience and ability outside of academia.
All it takes to tap into this pool of knowledge is taking the time to get to know the right people and simply get to know them. It’s classic networking. Buy them breakfast and pick their brain. Offer to help with an activity they have underway. Commisserate with them during their peak time. Distract them when they are slow.
If you want to be better at finance and accounting, get to know someone in that group. If you want to know more about logistics, go talk to someone in that function. Want to know about real estate? That’s a group always willing to make friendly business contacts.
