Sometimes as a young professional I find it hard to forget that the goal of things is the successful execution of business objectives which has little or nothing to do with personal objectives or goals. Personal objectives are achieved through the successful implementation of the business strategy. If the business is unsuccessful the rest is all secondary.
I have goals and frustrations and objectives that I never knew would be necessary to push to the side in furtherance of the business. They don’t teach in college how you need to put your personal feelings to the side and somehow find a way to prevent them from interfering with the larger business goals. It’s a surprisingly hard lesson. (For those encountering it for the first time at least. I’m sure there’s plenty of people who’ve been there done that who are laughing quietly to themselves remembering when they learned the same things.)
I was at dinner with three of my trusted colleagues/mentors/friends who introduced me to the concept of selective apathy.
Selective Apathy: Not caring about something that is important to you personally but has nothing to do with success in business or the business world.
