Say it quickly.

You know those 60 minute meetings on your calendar that only have about 15 minutes of useful content…why aren’t you holding people accountable for wastefulness of time?  Why do some people feel the need to go up to the last minute?  It isn’t bad or wrong to let people go 10, 20, even 45 minutes before the “end” of the meeting.  Too many people are held hostage by the calendar invite.

Few things in life take 1 hour exactly.  That just happens to be the culturally accepted block of time and, like with most things, people will fill the time they are given.

Don’t fill the time because that’s what’s blocked out.  Give the gift of time returned.  Let people hang up and get moving on their action items because many may have another call after the one they got off.  If they have 30 found minutes to get something done then it’s more likely to be completed than if they have to balance it against several other action items that could come up.
