Ideas in their infancy are fragile creatures. They can die simply because they are not given an environment to thrive within. The single best part of brainstorming sessions is knowing that you are identifying new ideas that are not yet developed so you know not to kill them too soon.
There are a number of types of people that do not do well with handling new ideas. These are the people that like order and structure, that want to be given clear direction. With these people, ideas are often not given the air to breathe and develop within. They are like dry soil – ideas can grow if they are hardy enough from the outset but you won’t get the yield you were hoping for.
New ideas really are like infants and do not have the strength in their bones and muscles to stand on their own yet. They need to be pampered and rocked to ensure they are given a chance to survive. If you are looking for new ideas and hoping that your team develops them organically you may need to look at the team to understand how they respond to new and different things so that you can understand what you should expect to get in return.
