One of my favorite life lessons: It’s better to have them offer you the office than to take it and have it taken away later. I was told this not long after an office move. The space had been designed for growth and not all of the offices were taken. They were offering them to random people to use and I was offered one.

If I had taken that office, there was a decent chance that someone more senior would get hired in the future and they’d need it. Who wants to be the person removed from their seat? No one.

It’s better to be given something because your leadership thinks you should have it than to take it today and have someone take it back from you. It’s always easier for others to knock someone down that reached outside of their “area” than to knock someone down who had been built up through actions over time.
