Meeting face to face versus regular communication. The trade offs.

Part of being Gen Y that I really enjoy is watching the generations that haven’t lived with Tech for the majority of their lives try to adapt to new ways of communicating. 15 years ago if you wanted to have a productive 2+ hour meeting it had to be done in person. You had to be in the same office or travel to meet.

Now the shift is done and past. It is not only easy to communicate remotely, often it is more productive. You don’t have any wasted travel hours. Each person can move around as needed without needing as many breaks. Work can begin immediately after without a need to travel back or spend the awkward socializing time when everyone really just wants to get things done.

It also makes face to face time different. Instead of face to face meetings being s time where work must be done it becomes an opportunity to learn the other person and better understand the bigger picture. Time spent has only one goal instead of being spread over multiple topics and work styles.

So the next time you travel, do you really need to be in that plane?
