Make yourself replaceable

One of the greatest skills that any employee should learn is the art of making themselves replaceable. This may seem a bit counter-intuitive to many but that’s the power of it. Very few people work to automate their job and make what they do completely efficient. The common refrain is “why put myself out of a job?”

The reality is people who automate their work almost always get another, bigger job because the boss wants them to recreate that same success again. If you are successful again, you get another, bigger chance.

Making yourself replaceable is like a superpower. People can’t believe someone is able and willing to do it. Yet the outcome is almost always positive for the business and the individual.

The greatest leaders always want smart, capable people working for them because they make the leader look better. This is exactly the same concept because that leader is making sure their replacement is in the wings and waiting.

Why would you ever want to put yourself in a position where you have no options for what to do next?
