Humor is not always the best medicine.

Bad situations aren’t fun.  Tension between the group is not desirable.  Some people like to defuse situations through humor.  A well timed joke can sometimes break through the tension but if you don’t judge the tone correctly it is just as likely to backfire and make the situation worse.  Humor is can be hit or miss.  If you don’t know your audience well, along with their sensibilities, you may be attempting something that will make everything worse.
