How deep into #design do you need to get?

One of the most common activities for delivery groups to go through is to design and choose some technology that they are going to be using for something.  Sometimes teams get very specific with their design needs and sometimes they are very open to going with the “out of the box” functionality.  The goal is to always end up with a tool that will make their processes better.

Design is a curious topic.  To some it means User Interface.  To others it means the fields that will be populated with their data.  To still others it means defining the processes supported by the system.  It is rare to find end users that can think through all of these areas at the same time.

As with most things, know your limits.  Know what you care about but more specifically know what you don’t care about.  Expressing opinions about topics that you don’t hold a firm opinion about can mislead.  A strong opinion and weak opinion will often look the same to the group trying to provide you with a solution.
