Good managers make order out of chaos.

Chaos is the killer of momentum and enthusiasm.  Yes, some people thrive off chaos, but the most productive state for a person, group or organization is order.

A good manager is someone who creates that order for their employees.  Sometimes it’s just a matter of taking guesswork out of the day to day activities.  Sometimes it goes deeper to fixing fundamental flaws in the way things are.  The end result should be the same though – order.

Good managers make it look easy.  They are the ones that have highly profitable groups, motivated employees and no major delivery issues.  The manager on top of that one just has to keep it running.  What’s not seen are all of the little things that manager does to maintain the order.  Knowing how to work with each employee, knowing when to push and when to back off.  Team Dynamics are not easy to manage.

The same is true of Project Leaders.  The best in the business make it look easy by keeping everything in order.

Think about this the next time you are working with a team.  The manager doesn’t even have to be a manager in name, sometimes it’s just a person who shows up and gets the job done.
