Be your own perfect little snowflake! Be different and unique! (I can’t believe I just said that….)

It’s a platitude that parents are always telling their kids.  You are special, you are different, you can do whatever you want.  It’s usually not true but it makes everyone feel better.

But here’s the thing – if you are in sales and you are not different you will fail, you will lose and you will eventually leave. Sales is not about being another sheep.  You must have something different to say and you must catch someone’s attention.  No one wants to spend time getting to know the vanilla, bland personality on the other end of the line.  They want to get to know the person about to make their life better.

Or maybe they just want to get to know the person that allows them to forget about the rest of their day a bit better than anyone else can.  More than a few sales have been closed because the salesperson could talk fly fishing better than anyone else – and was willing to!  It doesn’t have to be a lot of different, but you have to be a person.
