The problem with Social Media is that it breaks complex thoughts down into bite sized nuggets.  These nuggets are then passed around as if they are profound and tantalizing…

I came across someone still using Microsoft Access. It made me incredibly sad inside.

Access used to be one of those great systems and solutions.  But then one day it no longer could keep up with the modern data world. To those still forced to use it, you have my deepest and most sincere condolences.

Is your office “Fit for Purpose”? #CRE #Design

Saw this great video on the psychology behind workplace design and work from home strategy – from an employee’s perspective.  Too often we forget to take basic human psychology into account when designing the workplace of the future or our alternative workplace strategies.  This is a great topic that all of us should be thinking…

Software philosophies applied to business processes can provide unique opportunities.

At this point, every new technology startup with a wiz-bang product has brought the idea of Beta products to popular consciousness.  Beta is the idea of something being complete but not quite ready for official/bug-free/have at it status. Why can’t the same concept be applied to business strategy?  Let’s play out this thought experiment: Your…

It all comes back to Respect

You don’t have to be respected to be successful.  But it helps. You don’t have to be respected to have lots of friends.  But it helps. You don’t have to be respected to be an industry leader.  But it helps. Respect is one of those funny things.  It’s really hard to earn and really easy…

Strategy is the key to successful tactical decisions.

Most decisions that people make on a day-to-day basis are tactical.  These decisions don’t require upper management sign-off and can be made as part of a job description.  They aren’t overly complicated and likely won’t cost a lot of money (relative to “large decisions”). But these decisions, in aggregate, add up to a greater impact…

Microsoft Excel – designed to be non-functional for advanced users

My job involves me working with a lot of Microsoft Excel files.  Many companies use it as a defacto database.  It also makes a handy data analysis tool in a pinch.  And Microsoft pitches it for all of these features. But then I ran into an issue just yesterday where if you want to lock…

What are you reading that your competition isn’t?

Typically in an industry you have your standard publications and personalities that are required reading.  If you bring them up in conversation, a large percentage of people will be familiar with the latest topic and be ready to provide their thoughts.  A quick Google search of “Top 10 People to Follow in ……” returns many,…

Trends versus Case Studies….which is better?

Let’s start with some definitions.  Trend: a general condition that is determined by looking a many data points.  Case Study: a specific condition that existed for a particular data point. Both can be used in any given situation but the applicability will vary.  It isn’t uncommon when you present someone with a trend to reply…

Nothing in life is free; everyone is driven by incentives.

If you think you are getting something for free, think again.  No service is free: Google is selling advertising based on their audience; DropBox is looking to get you hooked on the entry level and have you upgrade to more and more space; Facebook, Twitter and Pintrest are all now trying to monetize their audiences;…
