Not all bosses are created equal. Know the person you are dealing with.

Apparently Business Insider has been pushing a lot of content to LinkedIn lately.  The latest I’ve come across is 33 Things You Should Never Say to Your Boss.  What a load of crap.

Let’s start with the first.  Never say “You’re wrong.”  I’ve had a few bosses in my time and can honestly say this is a dividing line topic.  If you are not allowed to say “You’re Wrong” to a boss then they fall into the bad boss category.  If they are open to it then they might be a good boss.  There are another handful of phrases that they have in this same type of category.  My favorite part though is that they think it is better to say “I may be misinformed on this one, but I was under the impression that….” as a way of not saying “You’re Wrong.”  Any boss that makes you subjugate your own knowledge and capabilities to their own isn’t worth working for.

This brings me around to stereotypes.  Just stop it.  Stereotyping Baby Boomers or Gen Ys or Millenials or bosses or youngest children accomplishes nothing for you because everyone you come across is their own person.  Learn who you have to work with – their strengths and weaknesses, the ways they work, their quirks and capabilities.  Don’t fall back on simplistic ways of viewing the people around you.
