I encourage everyone who hasn’t to read the letter from Apple CEO Tim Cook. My hope is that this is the start of the conversation and not considered the end of it. We are at a pivotal time in the development of technology and now is not the moment for rash behavior or decisions on the part of the government.
In my own reading yesterday I’d say I saw people split about 50/50 on the issue. Even some that I would have thought would be strongly against any attack on encryption have sympathy for the FBI’s position currently. It is difficult to want to make an argument against what is seemingly a 1 time circumvention of a device used in a terrorist attack. The other side of the argument is precedent – once this is granted the first time there will be a second time and a third time and so on. Best to draw a bright line today of when, if ever, this type of action is appropriate. And that line should not be drawn by the FBI and the courts.
Think on this issue and form a researched and thought-through position. I’m personally on the side of full end-to-end encryption but I can understand people on the other side. Do not let fear make the decision for you though. With or without this back door or circumvention attacks may happen. Look down the road and see what kind of world we all want to live in.
