Convenience versus control….system design and security. #design #ui #ux

Convenience is a feature, not a requirement, in Enterprise systems.  At least that’s what we’re all told by corporate IT.  If they dictate what we are to do, then we are sure going to do it the right way.

But then again, what happened with Hilary Clinton?  For those living under a rock, she used personal email while Secretary of State instead of her government email.  Apparently she did this because it was more convenient.

If convenience is a decided factor for the Secretary of State (rightly or wrongly) then why don’t you believe your users are making the same decisions?  Everyday your users are seeking to bypass your internet block of Dropbox.  I’ll wager that some non-zero percentage of your in house users are leveraging personal mobile hotspots to do the work they need to do.  Talk about a giant uncontrolled gap in your fence.

The same is true for all systems.  Convenience is how people make their decisions on the solution to use.  If you aren’t building in convenience as a primary feature then you aren’t building a system meant to be used.
