Innovation is about change. Either you drive the change yourself or your competitors do and steal your market share. Apparently Dilbert has gone from innovative to a change dinosaur.
The theory that only bad (or bullied) CEOs introduce new products that cannibalize their current market share is absurd. It’s like saying that releasing the iPad Mini was bad because a large portion of Apple’s customers buy it instead of the more expensive new iPad. This isn’t the case.
Your goal in business is not to have any given product achieve a certain market share – your goal should be to grow your overall business. Cannibalization is a by-product of that. Having multiple options is rarely a bad decision. Especially if those options together have a greater market share than either would have individually.
