Communication is always step #1 in any solution.

Some may argue and say that Communication is actually deeper and more fundamental.  They are technically right but wrong about human nature.

It’s been 10 years now since I graduated from college (or Got Out technically).  One of my toughest lessons to learn is that not everyone approaches business situations with an eye on fixing problems and making the business better.  Sometimes they are simply tired or don’t have the time to think about it.  Other times they may simply not see something as a problem.  But then you have the Kingdom-builders and Politicals.

No matter who is opposite you the first step is Communication.  Sometimes it takes a lot of work to get through step 1 because you can’t find a way to get through.  You may be speaking a different language than them.  The words you are using may be exactly wrong to convince them of the situation and engage in a dialogue.

Communication is difficult and sometimes not possible.  There are always times when communication is impossible and the desired solution cannot be reached.  These situations require you to step back and find a new potential solution.  From there you go back to Step 1 and try again.
